It is believed that a virus called HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus).  This virus alters the structure of the cells it attacks and leads to AIDS or a somewhat lesser condition known as ARC (AIDS Related Condition or Complex).  Not everyone affected with the HIV virus will develop symptoms of AIDS or ARC.  Some people carrying the virus remain in apparent good health.  However, these individuals are capable of passing the virus to others.
